Back in August, Berkshire Grown presented a series of food preservation workshops, one of which I attended. (Two miraculously un-botulized mason jars — one containing spiced pears and one with spiced peaches — are proof.) During the workshop, a couple of filmmakers were present, documenting the scene. For someone who likes to stay firmly behind the lens, this was disturbing. Nevertheless, I wondered what the filmmakers were planning to do with the footage of our workshop. I recently learned:

FOOD MATTERS: From the Ground Up is a documentary film project about food that is being produced locally in the communities of the Northern Berkshires. It is a multi-faceted portrait of a community in process of creating a more localized, secure food system for all its residents. It will weave together stories of those growing or creating access to locally grown food and the places where it is being produced, sold, processed or delivered. These include farms and farmers, community-supported agriculture, farmers’ markets, gardeners in community, school or home gardens, food access and support organizations, restaurants, stores, and more. It will also include the voices of community members from all walks of life and their hopes for the future of their local food system. Northern Berkshire resident, Sharon Wyrrick, is directing and producing FOOD MATTERS: From the Ground Up.

Cool, right? You can see some video footage — including some from the canning workshop, and of the holiday farmers’ market in Williamstown — at their site. I haven’t watched the canning footage yet, because I’m petrified of seeing my ugly mug, but you can be sure that I’ll see the film in its entirely when/if it comes to a theater here in town.
